Shared Ground explores the relationship between Earth and one another through the medium of clay. Soil goes through a metamorphosis to become a ceramic work of art. It begins cold and loose in the depths of the earth. It emerges to be mixed with water and other minerals, becoming malleable and smooth, ready to be shaped and given a new purpose. It is then thrown in the fire to harden, making its surface so tense that it can explode from the presence of the smallest fracture. We are molded and tested in the same way throughout our lives as we entwine ourselves with others.

This exhibition showcases artwork by Judy Adams, Lotus Bermudez, Marsha Dorsey-Outlaw. Each piece dictates a period of time, a shared experience, or a cherished moment that reflects their lives as artists, mothers, daughters, and community leaders in Houston, Texas. Shared Ground provides a topographic understanding of these moments, with each artwork’s careful construction guiding the viewer’s comprehension of the larger whole. The works selected for this exhibition span the course of three decades and show the evolution of artistry as well as the transference of memory within the studio. Some works have been shown before, while others are being seen for the first time. Each piece is imbued with not only the soil of our shared ground, but the soul of each artist, bringing diverse yet interwoven artistic journeys together for this defining moment.
